Pulwama, Jan 17: The Department of Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare has introduced Hoop Houses or row covers in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district to popularise them for affordable crop cultivation during winters.
This low-cost technology aims to facilitate protected cultivation of crops, addressing the specific needs of the farming community in Kashmir.
Authorities disclosed that Hoop Houses, a proven method in developed countries for decades, have been established by Dr. Zahoor Ahmad Reshi, a Technical Officer and Agriculture Extension Official in the Agriculture Department.
Dr. Reshi utilises rice hulls as a growth medium for various vegetables and seed spices, fostering a sustainable and cost-effective approach.
Dr. Reshi, at the forefront of this initiative, highlighted the cultivation of diverse crops, including Pok Choi, American Kale, Beet Root, and Black Cumin (Kala Zeera), all thriving under the protective cover of Hoop Houses.
“The unique feature of this method is the gradual decomposition of rice hulls, providing crops with essential silicon, enhancing their immunity against various diseases,” Dr. Reshi said.
The cost-effectiveness of Hoop Houses becomes apparent as Dr. Reshi emphasised their affordability for farmers who may struggle with high expenses associated with poly houses or tunnelling systems.
“With a mere investment of Rs 1000-1200, a marginal farmer can create a row cover, securing a practical and economical solution,” He said.
He explained that construction of Hoop Houses involves fixing inverted U-shaped hoops in the soil at both ends, maintaining a height of 25 centimetres and a width of 70 centimetres.
“ The adjacent hoops, spaced at a convenient walking distance, form a curved structure covered with fabric, creating a low tunnel for crops to thrive under a protected environment,” He said.
Dr. Reshi envisions Hoop Houses as a versatile solution, addressing the winter deficit of green leafy vegetables in Kashmir.
“These structures not only enable the cultivation of such vegetables during harsh winters but also serve as a resource for preparing seedlings, facilitating early plantation and subsequent early harvest of crops,” He said, adding the sole aim of this pioneering initiative is to popularize Hoop Houses in Kashmir, providing farmers with an effective and affordable means to enhance crop cultivation and overcome seasonal challenges.
