JAMMU, June 26: The Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, declared on Monday that the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) would be lifted from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) when the region attains permanent peace. His remarks were made during his address at the Security Conclave held at Jammu University.
Singh acknowledged that AFSPA had already been abolished in numerous North East regions where peace has been restored. He expressed optimism that J&K would also witness the withdrawal of AFSPA once lasting tranquillity prevails in the area. However, he refrained from specifying a fixed timeframe for the measure.
Responding to a query regarding the timeline for the removal of AFSPA, the Defence Minister stated, “We cannot establish a precise time frame, but I can assure you that AFSPA will be lifted from J&K as soon as permanent peace is restored.” Emphasizing the significance of stability, he reiterated that the withdrawal of AFSPA had occurred in substantial portions of the North East and would follow suit in J&K.
Singh further emphasized that the decision to revoke AFSPA would be contingent upon the establishment of a lasting peace in the region. “AFSPA has been removed from larger parts of the North East region, and it will also be withdrawn from J&K whenever permanent peace is restored here,” he affirmed.
The Defence Minister’s remarks come in light of efforts to address the security situation in J&K and bring about sustained peace and stability. The assurance of AFSPA’s eventual removal reflects the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering a conducive environment for peace building in the region.
While no specific timeline was provided, Rajnath Singh’s statement signifies a concrete step towards the eventual repeal of AFSPA in Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the government’s determination to prioritize long-lasting peace and security in the troubled region.
