Srinagar, May 27: The Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-ud-din Bhat, has issued a strong appeal to parents, urging them to monitor their children’s activities closely and prevent them from bathing in rivers and other water bodies amid rising temperatures.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Dr. Bhat highlighted the heightened risk associated with water bodies during the current heat wave. “During heat waves, it’s natural for children to seek relief by visiting water bodies. However, in some water bodies, the water flow is extremely rapid and dangerous. To prevent any potential tragedies, it’s crucial for parents to keep a close watch on their children,” he said.
The Deputy Commissioner reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in preventing such tragedies, stressing that parental supervision is important in safeguarding children from the dangers posed by swift and high-water flows.
The Deputy Commissioner highlighted that an advisory had already been issued to caution people against allowing their children to venture into water bodies. He noted that while it is primarily the parents’ responsibility to ensure their children’s safety, the district administration has also taken proactive measures.
“Our teams are on high alert to prevent children from bathing in water streams across Srinagar, but it’s impossible for them to monitor every water body,” Dr. Bhat added.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) also issued a recent advisory, urging people to adhere strictly to the guidelines to avoid any unfortunate incidents. The advisory comes in response to a series of drowning incidents in the Srinagar, last year.
According to the data, 19 drowning incidents were reported last year, resulting in the deaths of more than a dozen people. This year, a tragic incident occurred when a boat carrying fifteen people capsized, leading to the drowning deaths of six individuals.
Chairs PAC meeting for implementation of SMILE-beggary scheme

The SMILE (Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise)-beggary scheme has been launched by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
At the outset, the DC took a detailed assessment of the proposals received from various NGOs under SMILE-Beggary Scheme. He discussed different aspects of the scheme in threadbare viz identification, transportation, sheltering, vocational training, schooling, health, etc of the persons involved in begging.
On the occasion, the DC stressed on coordinated efforts by all stakeholders for effective implementation of SMILE (Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprises) scheme. He called for preparing an efficient roadmap to rehabilitate and facilitate beggars to join mainstream to live a dignified life.
