Srinagar, Mar01: As the nationwide Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) drive approaches on March 03, the Health Department in Jammu and Kashmir has finalised all arrangements, setting up over 11,000 polio booths across the Union Territory.
Dr.TabasumJabeen, Director of Family Welfare, MCH, and Immunization, J&K, disclosed that the target this year encompasses vaccinating 19 lakh children below the age of five, with 10 lakh in Kashmir and 9 lakh in Jammu.
“We have ensured comprehensive arrangements across the Union Territory, establishing 11,000 immunization booths,” stated Dr.Tabasum.
With 45,000 trained vaccinators and 2500 supervisors appointed for monitoring activities in urban and rural areas, the department aims for thorough coverage. Dr.Tabasum highlighted the efforts to distribute vaccines to remote regions, including Gurez, Tangdar, and Machil, with helicopter assistance for transportation.
Dr. Mir Mushtaq, Spokesperson for the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir, affirmed the readiness in the valley, emphasizing extensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities.
On March 3rd, booth activities will commence, followed by door-to-door campaigns on March 4th and 5th to ensure comprehensive coverage. Dr.Mushtaq urged parents to bring their children to vaccination booths or health facilities for immunization.
The Health Department called upon all stakeholders to participate in the National Immunization Day, underscoring the importance of maintaining the polio-free status of the country and Jammu & Kashmir.
Special attention will be directed towards slum areas, brick kilns, construction sites, and other vulnerable areas, with rigorous surveillance maintained to guarantee maximum coverage.
The Pulse Polio Immunisation Program, initiated in India in 1994, has been instrumental in achieving polio-free certification from the WHO in 2014, marking a significant milestone in public health.
