Pulwama, Apr 24: As the election campaign is under for parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is witnessing a resurgence led by a cadre of young leaders.
Political analysts believe that this rejuvenation comes in the wake of defections and the departure of many prominent figures from the party in recent times.
They maintain that among these young faces injecting new vigour into the PDP’s campaign include Iltija Mufti, Aijaz Ahmad Mir and Waheed ur Rehman Parra.
Iltija Mufti, the daughter of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, is seen canvasing for the party in various segments of the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency. Iltija revealed her belief in Mehbooba not just as a daughter but as a dedicated PDP worker, affirming her unwavering commitment to the party’s ideology.
Mehbooba, facing what some consider the toughest challenge of her political career due to defections and the loss of her father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, is being supported by Iltija’s grassroots efforts. She has been engaging directly with party workers, aiming to rekindle connections and reinvigorate the party at its core.
Aijaz Ahmad Mir, a former MLA from the Wachi Constituency, is tirelessly campaigning for Mehbooba Mufti in the Shopian segment of the southern constituency. He passionately urges voters to support their party president, whom he views as a strong candidate to represent the people in Parliament.
In Srinagar Constituency, Waheed ur Rehman Parra, PDP’s candidate, has been a key figure in articulating the party’s vision. “Mehbooba Mufti has consistently raised the voice of Kashmir on every platform across India. We urge the people to place their trust in us and give us the opportunity to represent them in Parliament,” Parra told Rising Kashmir.
Commenting on the dynamic shift within the PDP, senior journalist Mushtaq Ahmad from Pulwama noted that the party’s election campaign is now predominantly driven by these young leaders.
He observed their tireless efforts, utilising all their skills and capabilities, recognising that this election serves as a crucial test for them. “A victory at this juncture would be a significant morale boost for the PDP, while a loss could impact the party’s performance in future assembly elections,” Ahmad said.
Mohit Bhan, PDP spokesperson, said that after 2019, Mehbooba entrusted a greater role for youth in the party. “The vision is that this is the challenging time for youth and the youth have a greater role to play in it,” he said, adding that they have young faces across all constituencies.
He said that under the guidance of their seniors, these energetic young leaders do a lot of leg work to connect with the grassroots level. Bhan expressed hope that these young leaders will pull off a show for the party.
