IIMC organises 3-day media skills workshop

Jammu, April 05: Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Jammu organised a three day media skills workshop.
On the first day of the workshop on Friday, famous traveller writer Dr. Kainat Kazi, senior journalist Rama Solanki, senior writer Dr. Mahesh Kaul and many eminent subject experts trained the students of all three courses of the institute along with students from other institutes of Jammu and Kashmir in the first session. In the second session, renowned documentary film maker Shivani Pandey gave hands-on practice of film making to the students.
In the beginning of the programme, Megha Pandey of Hindi Journalism and Nikita Meshram of English Journalism gave information regarding workshops and experts.
On this occasion, Dr. Kainat Kazi, who came from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, showed the ‘Coffee Table Book’ published in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh and told everyone in detail about the research and research stages done in preparing it.
Addressing the journalism students, Dr. Kainat Kazi said, “To become a traveller, one has to work hard. A traveller first collects his money and then goes on a trip. After getting recognized, one may get any sponsor. To write a travelogue one has to increase his/her vocabulary. If you read the stories of the travels of earlier travellers, you wonder what the society was like in those times, like Rahul Sanskritiyan has written that there is no road on the Himalayas.”
Dr. Kazi elaborated to the students that when visiting any historical place or ancient site, keep in mind that evening time is the ‘golden hour’ for taking photographs. She explains that the temple faces east, so the photographer has to take care of where the light comes from. The traveller should write the content himself, only then his experience and feelings will be visible in words and sentences. When visiting any protected site, read the information written on the board or inscription there. She instructed me to read about architecture and said that before writing, anyone must take care of whom it is writing, who are readers or viewers? How is documentation done, etc.
During the program, senior writer Dr. Mahesh Kaul said, “The work of journalism is completely practical. Deadline is important and one who does not work on the deadline becomes ‘dead’ in journalism. We have forgotten to read editorial articles and forgotten to read the newspapers also. Newspapers are pseudo supporters of news or ideas.” He told the students that we cannot create our own narrative based on the Western narrative. Every journalist should keep culture, language and country in mind.
Senior journalist Dr. Rama Solanki from Noida said, “journalist students should become journalists first and not anchors. It is the job of the anchor to keep the speakers glued to the topic being discussed. Every anchor has his own style. If you talk from the heart the message will reach the heart. Every anchor should have his own vocabulary. The future journalist needs to work on himself and should understand the video.”
She explained that a good anchor writes his own story. The job of an anchor is to convey the whole thing by using fewer words. It is also necessary to update yourself. If a journalist does not update himself, he will become outdated. She explained that gossip is also a type of storytelling. In any conversation, it is important to keep in mind ‘Past’, ‘Present’ and ‘Future’ i.e. ‘PPF’. You should be confident in the language you are speaking. Knowing the local language is your strength.
Addressing the visiting participants in the inaugural session, Prof. Anil Soumitra, Regional Director of IIMC, Jammu said that theory needs to be experimental. Communication students must learn to read and write.
He explained that Communication is an art as well as a science. Therefore, the science of listening, viewing, and expression are as important as the art of listening, looking, and expression. Words, sound and visuals are essential ingredients for expression. He also gave detailed information about the workshop. On this occasion, Dr. Dilip Kumar, Associate Professor presented a vote of thanks. During the workshop, Dr. Vinit Kumar Jha Utpal, Dr. Anshula Garg, Yasir Arafat of IIMC along with Dr. Rabia Gupta, lecturer of Jammu University and many students, faculties and staff were present.
