MeT forecasts improvement in weather from Friday

Srinagar, Nov 09: Higher reaches received light to moderate snowfall, while rain lashed plains on Wednesday. The Meteorological department has predicted significant improvement in prevailing weather conditions from Friday onward.
Director MeT, Srinagar Centre, Sonam Lotus told Rising Kashmir that they were expecting inclement weather to continue till Thursday evening, and thereafter there will be a significant improvement in weather from Friday onward till November18th .
“There is the possibility of light to moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches at many places during 9th November evening to 11th November forenoon. There is no forecast of any major rain or snowfall in the region during this spell,” he said.
“We are expecting improvement in prevailing weather conditions from 11th November to 18th November in Kashmir valley,” he said.
As per the MeT advisory, snowfall and low temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation mainly over Zojila, Jammu-Srinagar highway, Leh-Manali road etc between November 9th to November 11th.
“People are advised to check the status of these roads from traffic police prior to embarking on a journey to avoid inconveniences,” it said.
As per MeT department officials, five inches of fresh snowfall was recorded at the ski-resort Gulmarg in Baramulla. In Kupwara’s district, Tangdar and Keran sectors recorded 9 to 11 inches of snow, 4 to 7 inches was recorded in Gurez, Tulail in Bandipora, and 5 to 6 inches of snow were recorded over Peer Ki Gali and Sonamarg areas of Valley.
However, light rain lashed plains, Srinagar recorded 2.7 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours, while Gulmarg recorded 176 mm, Qazigund 2.2 mm, Kupwara 8.8 mm, and Pahalgam 4.6 mm, and Kokernag 0.6 mm.
The downpour has resulted in a dip in night temperature across the valley as Gulmarg was the coldest place in Kashmir and settled at minus 2.0 degrees Celsius with a 1.0 °C as maximum temperatures on Wednesday.
Summer capital Srinagar recorded a maximum of 9.6 degrees Celsius and 5.4 °C as the minimum temperature.
Health resort Pahalgam recorded 6.6 °C as the maximum temperature and a minimum of 1.1°C. Qazigund recorded a maximum of 9.8°C and 5.0° C as the minimum temperature.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 8.2°C, while minimum temperatures settled at 4.7 °C.
