Srinagar, Jan 31: The Kashmir Power Distribution Limited Corporation (KPDCL) said Tuesday claimed it had restored power to all parts of Kashmir, with the exception of a few border areas, after a heavy snowfall on Monday disrupted major electricity lines across the valley.
Er. Javid Yousuf, Chief Engineer KPDCL, informed Rising Kashmir that the restoration teams were pressed into service as snowfall began in the Kashmir valley. He stated that despite the heavy snowfall, their team were able to maintain electricity supply without disruptions .
“On the first day of snowfall, electricity in three districts, which include Kulgam, Budgam, and Kupwara, was disrupted, however, on Tuesday electricity in all the districts was restored,” CE said.
However, people from various areas of the valley, including people living on Srinagar’s outskirts, said they were facing prolonged power cuts since the occurrence of snowfall. They said the department is not providing electricity to them as per the schedule they issued.
Despite the frequent rate increases, consumers in various parts of the city informed Rising Kashmir that they frequently experience severe power outages. A consumerfrom HMT claimed that the department had recently increased their electricity rate by twofold. However, the electricity in the locality has not improved.
However, the department refuted the allegations by stating that their personnel had been working since the Kashmir valley started to experience snowfall. They also acknowledged that there were small issues in some parts of Srinagar and elsewhere that caused power outages for some residents.
The KPDCL claims that 99 percent of the region is fault-free, and they will get their electricity on schedule. They continued by saying that on Monday, when snowfall started in Kashmir, there was a 1600-megawatt demand for electricity, compared to a 1650–1700-megawatt supply on average days.
“Roads are closed, and there has been significant snowfall in certain border locations. Although our personnel are unable to get to them, they will start working right away to restore power as soon as the route is clear,” the official said.
