Anantnag, June 26: Municipal Committee (MC) of Pahalgam in collaboration with the Pahalgam administration carried out a mega sanitation drive to ensure a “pristine and plastic-free environment” ahead of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2023 that will begin on July 1.
The drive started from Nunwan base camp to Sadhu Padao Pahalgam with the primary objective of promoting a pristine environment in Pahalgam, an official said, adding, “The event served as a clear message to both locals and pilgrims and emphasizes the significance of maintaining cleanliness during the upcoming pilgrimage and beyond.”
Banners displaying the message “Green City, Clean City, My Dream City” have been installed which serve as a visual reminder to the residents and visitors that their collective effort can bring about positive change, the official said, adding that the slogan encapsulates the aspirations of the community to cultivate an environment where nature thrives, and everyone takes responsibility for maintaining cleanliness.
Along with SDM Pahalgam, the sanitation drive witnessed active participation from MC Shopian, MC Bijbehara and MC Pahalgam. The campaign focused on two key aspects: cleanliness and minimizing plastic waste. The participants tirelessly worked towards cleaning streets, parks, and other public spaces, ensuring that they were free from litter and debris. Additionally, they actively spread awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and encouraged the use of eco-friendly alternatives.
President MC Pahalgam, Owais Nazir told Rising Kashmir that they are committed to providing a clean and welcoming environment for the pilgrims. “The aim of this mega sanitation drive is to ensure a sustainable and hygienic environment for pilgrims as well as to contribute to the overall well-being of the local ecosystem,” he said.
Owais said that ahead of the yatra, they are going to organize another mega sanitation event throughout Pahalgam to advocate for the preservation of cleanliness and the eradication of plastic waste. “Our aim is to create a memorable and eco-friendly experience for all visitors,” he said.
