SRINAGAR: Municipal Committee Kunzer and Municipal Committee Tangmarg-Gulmarg have achieved a remarkable milestone by collectively selling the first batch of segregated waste, weighing 2811 kgs, to interested buyers.
The waste has been generated from the Solid Waste Management facility at Kunzer
This development marks a significant progress in promoting sustainable waste management practices in the Kashmir valley. These two municipal committees have not only initiated the collection of segregated waste from households, markets, and hotels but have also found a way to generate income from it. The waste is then transported to the Solid Waste Management facility in Kunzer.
Mir Tafveez, the Executive officer of MC Tangmarg- Gulmarg and Kunzer, told Rising Kashmir that the Jammu and Kashmir Government has constructed a Solid Waste Management facility at Kunzer for two municipal committees – the Municipal committee Tangmarg-Gulmarg and the Municipal committee Kunzer. Both committees bring in solid waste on a daily basis, which is generated from households, markets, and hotels within their jurisdictions.
“We have hoppers vehicles for waste collection, equipped with twin separate bins for the collection of dry and wet waste. The wet waste is decomposed at the solid waste management facility. However, dry waste such as papers, polythene, plastic, and tin materials are separated and collected in this facility, which can also generate income for the municipal committee ,” Tafveez said.
He said that the municipal committee Tangmarg-Gulmarg and the Municipal committee Kunzer have successfully sold the first batch of segregated waste, weighing 2811 kgs, to interested buyers who were selected through a tender process.
“A total of 2811 kgs and 750 grams of segregated waste was sold for the first time in the Kashmir valley by the two municipal committees. This includes 130 kgs of tetra pack waste, 142.900 grams of chips/cleaned polythene/wrappers, 507 kgs and 650 grams of cardboards, 1461 kgs and 200 grams of polythene, 206 kgs of waste cloth material, 40 kgs of rubber items (old shoes, etc.), 40 kgs of glass bottles, 256.1 kgs of plastic bottles, and 28 kgs of tin material,” the Executive officer explained.
He also further said that through the bio-mining process, all the legacy waste at the old dumping sites in the Municipal Committee Tangmarg-Gulmarg has been cleared. Some portion of the land will be utilized for green spaces, while another portion will be used as a sanitation yard for storing vehicles.
