In the heart of the old town of Shehr-e-Khaas Baramulla, a centuries-old tradition of baking sweet bread locally known as ‘Roatth’ continues to thrive. The bakers, known for their crispy and delicious breads have been serving the people of north Kashmir’s Baramulla for generations with one of Kashmir’s favourite bread of olden times, Roatth.

‘Rooth’- a crispy bread studded with nuts, dry fruits and seeds, adding to the beauty of this business. Serpentine lines can be seen waiting for their turn to collect the ‘Roath’ .

Despite the modernization of the baking industry, bakers commonly known as ‘Kandar’ have held onto their traditional methods and recipes, which have been passed down from one generation to another.

The narrow alleys of Shehr-e-Khaas Baramulla are lined with dozens of these bakers, who continue to serve their loyal customers every morning and evening.

The Urdu Bazar in Baramulla is another place where one can find renowned bakers who sell these delicacies on a daily basis.

Bilal Ahmad, a baker from the Urdu bazar, shares that people from various parts of Kashmir, especially Srinagar and south Kashmir, visit Baramulla to purchase Roatth, which is famous across Kashmir.

Ahmad takes pride in his work and emphasizes the importance of using high-quality ingredients and traditional methods to produce the perfect bread.

The bakers’ dedication to their craft is inspiring, and their bread is not just a culinary delight but a cultural heritage.
