Bandipora, Feb 22: The district administration of Bandipora hosted a mega winter carnival at the picturesque Athwatoo Valley on Wednesday to showcase its potential for winter tourism and winter sports.
Hundreds of excited and adventurous youths from around the area flocked to the resort, despite heavy snow on the roads, to witness its natural beauty. Local artists welcomed them with Gojri tribal songs, creating a soulful atmosphere.
The carnival has lent a special vibrancy to Bandipora’s winters, warming up the atmosphere and providing an opportunity for youth to take part in such festivals at some of the district’s unexplored tourist attractions.
This inaugural event at Athwatoo Village garnered an enthusiastic response, not only from the people of the area but also from adventurers from other districts.
Locals were delighted, commending the district administration for organising the first-ever winter festival at Athwatoo.
Ali Mohammad Khan, a local, told Rising Kashmir that it was unusual to witness a large influx of people to the village despite the substantial snowfall this year, whereas typically people from other villages arrive in May when the snow melts.
Another senior citizen, Ghulam Mohiuddin Khatana, said despite the frigid temperatures, they felt a sense of warmth and were spurred to leave their homes due to the enthusiasm of the youth.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Dr Owais Ahmed while addressing the media on the sidelines of the event said these festivals turn the ordinarily dull and chilly days into warm and joyous ones.
“These festivals not only help in exploring the tourism potential of these villages but also provide the youth with an opportunity to direct their energy into constructive activities instead of wasting it,” he said.
The DC urged the younger generation to steer clear of drugs and utilise their free time in constructive pursuits rather than associating with negative influences.
