Kulgam, May 18: Police on Thursday said they detained four people and confiscated five vehicles involved in the illegal transportation of mining materials in the Qazigund area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
An official said the action resulted in the seizure of a JCB, two tippers, and two tractor-trolleys.
“After receiving precise information about the illegal mining, a police squad led by Station House Officer (SHO) Qazigund arrived at the suspected location and detained four people involved in the unlawful mining of minerals from the river Sandran,” he said, adding that police have identified the suspects as drivers, including Aqib Wani of Waphzan Bijbehara, Aijaz Dar of Arwani Bijbehara, Idrees Bhat of YK Pora, and Rahil Farooq Bhat of YK Pora.
Police have filed FIRs 84/2023 and 86/2023 under relevant sections at police station Qazigund, and an investigation is underway, the official said.
Meanwhile, police have urged the general people not to engage in any unlawful mining activities from any river, since this is a violation of government guidelines, warning that anyone who does so would face serious legal consequences.
