Srinagar, Nov 28: Inspector General of Police V K Birdi on Tuesday said that a student from National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, has been charged with hurting religious sentiments for sharing a video on social media.

Talking to media about the incident, IGP said that police received information about student protests at NIT Campus, discovering that the video, not originally created by the student but shared from a YouTuber, had offended religious sentiments.

“The Registrar intervened, educated the student, and legal action was initiated based on the Registrar’s request. Investigations are ongoing,” IGP Birdi said

The incident follows massive protests by NIT Srinagar students against alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by a colleague of a different faith.

Upon receiving information and a letter from the NIT campus Registrar seeking legal action, the police acted under relevant laws.

IGP Birdi said this evening, police received information about a protest at NIT campus. Upon investigation, it surfaced that a student had posted a video on social media that hurt people’s sentiments, especially religious sentiments.”

“The video was not the student’s own but was shared by a YouTuber. Tuesday evening witnessed protests at NIT Campus following the discovery of the social media post by students,” he added.

Earlier student protesters demanded stringent action against the non-local student who has been sent home on leave on Tuesday.

The students had blocked both the gates of the institution till late evening and raised slogans inside the campus.
