Srinagar, Feb 08: Following a targeted terrorist attack in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar on Wednesday evening, a worker from Punjab, 27-year-old Rohit Mashi R/o Amritsar, succumbed to his injuries at SMHS hospital, bringing the toll to two. Medical Superintendent of SMHS hospital confirmed the demise of Rohit, who had sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen during the attack. The incident also claimed the life of another worker, Amritpal Singh, 31, from Amritsar, who was shot dead on the spot.
Security measures have been intensified across Kashmir in response to the attack. Police sources revealed that sensitive areas in Srinagar have been identified, with a doubling of forces deployment and heightened vigilance. Additionally, CCTV surveillance, checkpoints, and frisking points have been reinforced to address security concerns.
The police expressed concern over attempts by terrorists to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere in the Valley, utilizing Over Ground Workers to carry out soft targets. This incident follows a similar attack in December 2023 when a retired SSP Mohammad Shafi Mir was shot dead inside a mosque in Baramulla district.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, expressing shock and grief over the loss of innocent lives. He assured that no efforts will be spared to bring the perpetrators to justice.
In a security review meeting presided over by Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone VK Birdi, strategic initiatives to enhance law enforcement efforts were discussed. The meeting focused on generating actionable intelligence to counter anti-national elements and ensuring strict legal measures against terrorist associates.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in maintaining peace and stability in the region, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and coordinated efforts to combat terrorism.

Div Com, IGP Kashmir hold security review meet after Srinagar terror attack
In the aftermath of the tragic terrorist attack that claimed the lives of two Punjab residents in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar district, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir convened a security review meeting on Thursday to assess and enhance security arrangements, particularly in minority clusters and critical areas across the valley.
According to a police official at the IGP Kashmir’s Office, a Video Conference meeting of Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) was co-chaired by Inspector General of Police Kashmir Range, Virdhi Kumar Birdhi, and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, on Thursday late evening.
During the meeting, participants were briefed about the extensive security measures undertaken to safeguard minority communities in these clusters, with a focus on strengthening security to ensure a secure environment.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, VK Bidhuri, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between the magistracy and police to ensure a secure and congenial environment, while IGP Kashmir, Virdhi Kumar Birdhi, urged participants to remain vigilant and constantly review arrangements to refine responses and prevent such incidents in the future.
The meeting, attended by DCs, SSPs, DIGs of all the ranges, SSP PCR Kashmir, SP South City Srinagar, and SP Cargo, also discussed all aspects of the recent target killings in Srinagar. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were formulated to thwart similar incidents in the future.
On Wednesday, two residents of Amritsar, Punjab, were fatally shot by terrorists in Shaheed Gunj, Srinagar. While Amritpal Singh succumbed to injuries on the spot, his associate Rohit Mashi, who sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen, underwent surgery but tragically succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
In response to the targeted killings, security has been intensified in Srinagar and adjoining districts to prevent further terrorist incidents.
