Srinagar, Aug 02: Senior National Conference (NC) leader and Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, on Saturday reiterated the party’s strong demand for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the issue transcends party lines and reflects the collective sentiment of the people.Speaking to reporters at the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha here, Wani said: “Statehood is not just our demand, but the demand of every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir and every political party. We were a full-fledged state, but, unfortunately, J&K remains the only place in the country that was downgraded to a Union Territory without the consent or consultation of its people.” Wani said that by restoring Statehood, the Centre won’t do any favour to the people of J&K. “Our demand remains that Statehood be restored without any further delay,” he said.He further added that restoration of statehood is not just a political slogan but a prerequisite for empowerment and administrative accountability. “Alliance partners are demanding it, and so are other parties. It is the collective voice of the people,” he said.Referring to the importance of the tourism sector, the CM’s advisor said that livelihoods across the region are directly tied to it. “Tourism is one of our most vital sectors. “Every segment — be it hotels, pony-wallas, drivers, or houseboat owners — is dependent on it. The well-being of thousands of families is linked to the smooth functioning of tourism,” he said.Earlier in the day, Wani, along with Cabinet Minister Satish Sharma, participated in a public outreach programme at the party office Nawa-e-Subh. They interacted with various public delegations who had come to raise issues related to basic amenities, infrastructure and local governance.“The party is committed to listening to the people’s grievances and ensuring that they are addressed on time. We will be taking up these issues with the concerned departments and administrative officials,” Wani said. Several senior NC leaders, including Nazir Khan Gurezi, Salman Sagar, Shameema Firdous, and others, were also present during the event and engaged with visiting delegations. The programme, according to party leaders, is part of an ongoing initiative aimed at strengthening the connect between the leadership and the grassroots.
