Budgam, July 29: With an aim to promote sports culture and scout emerging talent at the grassroots level, the Department of Youth Services and Sports (YSS) Budgam organised Inter-Zonal District Level Competitions for Under-17 Girls in Cricket and Fencing on Tuesday.As per a statement issued here, the cricket matches were held at the District Sports Stadium, while the fencing competitions took place at the Indoor Stadium Budgam, attracting vibrant participation from all twelve zones of the district. The events were marked by enthusiasm, discipline, and a strong display of sportsmanship as young athletes competed for top honours and future opportunities.During the cricket tournament, various teams from different zones clashed in competitive matches, showcasing not just athletic ability but also team coordination, resilience, and tactical understanding. The performance of the participating girls was highly appreciated by spectators, coaches, and officials, who lauded their dedication and discipline on the field. District Youth Services and Sports Officer Ghulam Hassan Lone visited both venues to encourage the student participants.“It is a joy to see our young boys and girls participating with such energy and passion. These events not only promote physical fitness but also foster leadership, resilience, and teamwork,” he said, adding that the department remains committed to providing platforms for students to grow as athletes and leaders. He also praised the role of field staff and event officials for ensuring smooth conduct of the competitions, and highlighted the importance of such initiatives in shaping the sporting landscape of the region. A selection committee was present at both venues to monitor performances and shortlist promising players from all categories. These selected players will represent Budgam in the upcoming Inter-District and Provincial Level Competitions. The day-long sporting event stands as a testament to the growing interest in sports among young girls in Budgam, and reflects the efforts of the YSS Department in nurturing talent that could shine at state and national levels.
