Srinagar, June 16: To mark the global observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the Department of Social Work, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies on Aging (CISA), Moul Mouj Foundation (MMF), Srinagar, organised a day-long programme here at KU main campus on Monday.

The programme was aimed at sensitising people about the rising concerns of elder abuse and the need to safeguard the dignity and rights of older adults.

During the programme speakers highlighted the importance of elder care, community responsibility, and policy advocacy in addressing the physical, emotional, and financial abuse often faced by elderly people.

Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her message, highlighted the importance of compassionate elder care and said, “Our elders are the moral anchors of our society. Protecting their dignity and ensuring their safety is not just a legal responsibility but a cultural and emotional one. The University is committed to promoting a society where elders are valued and respected.”

Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, in his remarks, said that institutions of higher education must take the lead in shaping youth consciousness around elder care.

“Through awareness, research, and outreach, we must strive to make our campuses and communities inclusive and safe for all age groups, especially our senior citizens,” he said.

Dean, School of Social Sciences KU, Prof. Aneesa Shafi, reflected on the changing social dynamics and the need to cultivate sensitivity among youth regarding elder issues.

Prof. Masooda Yaseen, Advisory Member, MMF, called for the implementation of practical, community-based solutions to address the cases of elder neglect.

Prof. Syeda Afshana, faculty at MERC and Project Head, Intergenerational Communication, spoke about the communication breakdown with elders and emphasized the need to rebuild intergenerational bonds through dialogue and meaningful engagement.

Earlier, Prof. Shazia Manzoor, Head, Department of Social Work, KU, in her welcome address, said the event reflects the department’s commitment to socially relevant issues.

The event concluded with a collective pledge to uphold the rights of elderly persons and promote an age-friendly and compassionate society.

The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Shakeel ur Rehman, Secretary General, MMF.
