Kulgam, Dec 18: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) cracked down on traffic violators in Kulgam, booking 54 motorcycle riders and 14 drivers for various traffic violations on Monday. An amount totalling one lakh was collected in fines from these offenders.
An official said the department’s intensified enforcement, targeting overloading in commercial vehicles, mandatory crash helmet use for two-wheeler riders, and seat belt compliance for four-wheeler occupants. The squad specifically honed in on overspeeding and reckless driving during this enforcement drive.
Abrar Ahmad Kripak, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Kulgam, said the drive’s purpose is to strictly enforce traffic rules and penalise violators accordingly.
“The team seized vehicles and charged offenders under various sections of the Motor Vehicle Act. This proactive drive will expand to other areas of the town to apprehend additional offenders. Also, vehicles with defective number plates and improperly parked vehicles were also ticketed,” he said.
Kripak said that although the majority of offenders were two-wheeler riders, our team also focused on school buses and other passenger vehicles. Alongside issuing challans, 14 drivers received on-the-spot notices for driving license suspension due to traffic rule violations.
He further said that the MVD in Kulgam had suspended a total of 75 driving licenses in the current year 2023 through the Sarthi Portal.
