Jammu, March 06: The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (JKAACL) Thursday organised a captivating musical programme, Lal Wakh, at Jammu, to celebrate the life and legacy of the revered Kashmiri mystic poetess Lal Ded, also known as Lalleshwari.
Arvind Karwani, Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner, graced the occasion as the chief guest, while Harvinder Kour, Secretary, JKAACL, attended as the guest of honour.
In his address, Karwani highlighted the profound impact of Lal Ded’s poetry on Kashmiri culture and spirituality. He stressed the importance of preserving and promoting her rich literary heritage through such cultural initiatives. He also commended the artists and musicians for their heartfelt performances that brought the evening to life. Sanjeev Rana, Additional Secretary, JKAACL, in his welcome address, stated that the event aimed to revive and celebrate the timeless Vakhs (verses) of Lal Ded, which hold deep spiritual and philosophical significance. He acknowledged that the event was conceived and designed under the guidance of Kour. The programme commenced with a soulful recitation of Lal Wakh by renowned vocalist Deepali Watal, who captivated the audience with her mesmerising rendition. She was followed by another celebrated singer from Jammu and Kashmir, Naina Saproo, whose melodious voice evoked the essence of Lal Ded’s mysticism. Budding artists Shivani and Sharat also enthralled the audience with their melodious performances.
The singers were accompanied by talented musicians, including Rahul Sharma on santoor, Amit Anand on tabla, Amit Sharma on rabab, Chandan on synthesiser, and Ramesh Nirash on harmonium. Their expertise added depth and emotion to the recitals, making the event an unforgettable experience.

The event was skilfully conducted by esteemed writer Vijay Walli, who provided insightful narration and kept the audience engaged throughout. Lal Ded, a 14th-century Kashmiri mystic and poetess, remains an enduring symbol of self-realisation, devotion, and universal truth. Her poetry, known as Lal Vakhs, transcends religious and social barriers, making her a revered figure among both Hindus and Muslims. Her teachings emphasise inner spirituality, liberation from societal constraints, and the realisation of the divine within.
The programme successfully paid homage to Lal Ded’s timeless wisdom and literary contributions, leaving the audience deeply moved and inspired. JKAACL reiterated its commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural and literary heritage of Jammu and Kashmir through such initiatives.
