Srinagar, Nov 06: A recent twist in the ongoing renovation project at the bustling Gonikhan Market in Srinagar, a surprising hurdle has come to light. The project, aimed at revitalizing the market and improving its infrastructure, faced an abrupt halt due to the unexpected discovery of water pipelines near LD Hospital.
Suhail Ahmad Dar, the President of Gonikhan Traders Association, has expressed his frustration over the situation. He highlighted the need for thorough research and better collaboration with local stakeholders to avoid such disruptions. For a market that plays a vital role in the livelihoods of many families, the impact is far-reaching.
Manzoor Ahmad Malik, the General Secretary of the Gonikhan Traders Association revealed that authorities had proposed closing the market for a continuous ten-day period to expedite the renovations. However, the sudden revelation of the water pipeline gave traders pause, leading them to request an extended timeline for the work. Their primary concern was to minimize the disruption to their businesses and the community as a whole.
Suraj Gupta, the official responsible for the Smart City project, clarified that the delay arose from the necessity to relocate an existing water pipeline belonging to the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department. To address this, the PHE department has issued a tender for the pipeline’s relocation, which is currently in progress. Once this task is completed, the renovation work can resume.
Despite the challenges and setbacks, officials stress the importance of patience and comprehensive planning to ensure the successful rejuvenation of Gonikhan Market.
This incident underscores the vital need for improved coordination and communication between the renovation team and local stakeholders to prevent such unexpected disruptions in the future. As the situation unfolds, the people of Gonikhan Market remain hopeful that their beloved market will soon be back to its vibrant and thriving self.
Despite numerous attempts to reach out to Athar Amir Khan, the Srinagar Municipal Commissioner, for his input on the unfolding situation in Gonikhan Market, there has been no response from his end. Local stakeholders and community members are eager to hear from the municipal authorities and hope for a constructive dialogue to resolve the unexpected challenges that have arisen during the renovation project. The absence of communication from the SMC Commissioner highlights the need for open and transparent discussions to ensure the successful revitalization of this significant market.
