Srinagar, Nov 25: Kashmiri doctors serving in remote areas of Jammu under the rotational transfer policy on Monday appealed to the Health and Medical Education Department to facilitate their transfers back to Kashmir after completing their stipulated two-year tenure.
The rotational policy was designed to ensure that health institutions in far-flung areas of Jammu are adequately staffed, a goal that these doctors have fulfilled with dedication and professionalism.
A group of 100 doctors including medical officers and specialist doctors said they have worked diligently in challenging conditions, ensuring that people in remote regions receive consistent medical care despite logistic and resource constraints often faced in these areas.
“Having served for the agreed duration, we seek an opportunity to return to their home region to reunite with our families and contribute to the healthcare system in Kashmir,” one of the doctors told Rising Kashmir.
He said that the extended time spent away from home has posed personal and professional challenges, including prolonged separation from loved ones and the difficulty of managing dual responsibilities across regions.
“We doctors emphasize that our request is not just about personal convenience but also about maintaining a fair and balanced healthcare system,” the doctor said.
They said once they return, their expertise and experience will strengthen medical infrastructure in Kashmir, which also requires skilled professionals to address its unique healthcare needs.
“This situation highlights the importance of regular and timely implementation of rotational transfers to ensure well-being of both health professionals and communities they serve.”
The doctor said by adhering to the principles of rotation, authorities can continue to promote equitable healthcare access across all regions while ensuring that the medical workforce remains motivated and supported.
The doctors have their gratitude for the opportunities to serve in Jammu and remain committed to their duty. “We hope that our genuine appeal will be met with understanding and action, paving the way for a smooth transition that benefits everyone involved,” they said.
However, a senior official of the Health and Medical Education Department said that a Medical Officer is a Union Territory Cadre post and a doctor can be posted anywhere in any hospital in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
“We will look into the matter and see how it can be done in the due course of time. There should be doctors to replace them to make sure healthcare is not affected. Healthcare is a top priority for the department,” the official said.
