Srinagar, Oct 21: Top security officials confirmed on Monday that two to three trained terrorists affiliated with The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow group of Lashkar-e-Taiba, were responsible for the deadly attack in the Gagangeer area of Ganderbal district, which claimed the lives of a doctor and six construction workers on Sunday.
A senior official at the Police Control Room (PCR) Jammu informed Rising Kashmir that a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team, led by officers of Superintendent of Police (SP) rank, visited the site to coordinate the investigation into the attack. The official stated, “The NIA’s involvement is expected to enhance the investigation and ensure a thorough examination of the evidence. The team inspected the site and mapped locations where the deceased were recovered, along with areas near the temporary camp.”
According to the police officer, the terrorists were heavily armed and aimed to inflict maximum casualties. They opened fire indiscriminately with automatic weapons in multiple areas of the camp, including the mess hall where employees were stationed. “It appears that the terrorists had been positioned in the area and were familiar with the topography. They cut the electricity before unleashing their assault,” he added.
High alert has been declared throughout the area, with Ladakh Police also informed to remain vigilant. The police official noted, “The attackers spent approximately 15 minutes at the camp. Witness accounts suggest that the assault was orchestrated to maximize casualties.”
“It appears that the terrorists were heavily armed and spent 15 minutes at the camp. Based on accounts from the workers, it seems the attack was designed to cause the highest possible number of casualties,” the police official said.
The TRF has claimed responsibility for the attack. Senior officials from both the police and army are present at the scene to assess the situation and oversee a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Among the injured, five individuals are currently receiving treatment at SKIMS Hospital in Srinagar. In response to the attack, security forces have launched a significant cordon and search operation, deploying drones and helicopters to locate the attackers.
Survivors are providing statements as part of the ongoing investigation, while a thorough combing operation continues in the area.
