Ganderbal, Oct 08: In a significant political development, Mian Mehar Ali, representing the fourth generation of the Mian family from Baba Nagri, Kangan, emerged victorious in the Kangan ST constituency for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.
He secured a win by 3,770 votes against his competitor, Syed Jamat Ali Shaheen of the PDP. Both candidates were contesting their first election, but Mian Mehar Ali’s triumph further solidified the legacy of the influential Mian family in the region.
Mian Mehar Ali’s victory is the 11th consecutive win for the Mian family in Kangan, a constituency they have dominated for decades. His father, Mian Altaf Ahmed, currently a member of parliament from Anantnag-Rajouri, has also enjoyed a successful political career, having represented the constituency multiple times.
Speaking to the media, Mian Altaf Ahmed expressed his gratitude to the people of Kangan for their continued trust in his family. “I am thankful to the people of Kangan constituency for choosing their candidates. This marks the fourth generation of our family securing victory,” he remarked.
Historically, the Mian family has had a significant political influence in Kangan. Mian Nizamuddin won the seat on an NC ticket in 1962, while Mian Bashir Kiyanvi claimed victories for Congress in 1967 and 1972. Mian Altaf Ahmed followed in his predecessors’ footsteps with victories in 1987, 1996, 2002, 2008, and 2014. His 2014 win by a narrow margin of 432 votes was a testament to the family’s enduring influence.
With Mian Mehar Ali’s latest victory, the Mian family continues its dominance in Kangan, marking an uninterrupted political presence spanning generations.
