Kulgam, Aug 25: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and former MLA Kulgam, Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami on Sunday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party’s governance since 2018, questioning why the BJP hesitates to reveal its performance.
“The BJP must show its report card on key issues like inflation, employment and trade, which the people of Jammu & Kashmir are eager to see,” he said while speaking to reporters after the conclusion of a programme organised by the J&K Democratic Youth Federation (JKYDF) – a wing of CPI(M) – at the party office in Kulgam.
Tarigami said it is important to address the aspirations and concerns of the youth. He accused the government of delaying the upcoming assembly elections. “I don’t know how they will overcome their fear. The Supreme Court directed them, and after that, they took some steps,” he said.
He criticised the BJP for not fulfilling its promise of restoring statehood, pointing out that the issue has been ignored despite the Supreme Court’s stance on the matter.
The CPI(M) leader said the recent amendments to the business rules have further reduced the authority of the assembly by granting more powers to the Lieutenant Governor.
Tarigami called for “secular” parties to unite, set aside their differences, and work together to tackle the “challenging situation” faced by Jammu & Kashmir.
He said the BJP needs to be transparent about its actions since 2014 and provide answers to the people about its governance, especially regarding inflation, employment and trade.
“The people of Jammu & Kashmir are demanding accountability for the promises made by the BJP, similar to how the party has been held accountable in other states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra,” he said.
The Communist leader expressed hope that, in the future, the people of Jammu & Kashmir will collectively seek answers and work together to build a better future.
The programme also featured speeches by District Development Council (DDC) Chairperson Mohammad Afzal Parry, DDC Member and Party General Secretary for Kulgam Mohammad Abbas, among others, and was attended by scores of youth from across the district.
