Srinagar, Aug 20: Congress on Sunday paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Late Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary here and recalled his “selfless services and great contribution” to the nation.
According to a JKPCC statement issued here, the Congress leaders in an extraordinary function here terming the departed leader a symbol of services and sacrifices, who contributed immensely to the inclusive development of the nation and betterment of the people. They observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to Rajiv Gandhi.
The party highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s countless achievements and the services that he has rendered while greatly contributing to the inclusive development of the nation and the betterment of the people, especially the poor and downtrodden section. The former Prime Minister took various revolutionary steps to further bring the country at par with the fast-developing world powers, the leaders said.
“Gandhi believed in development, prosperity and unity and always worked in that direction. His achievements, especially the three-tier Panchayati Raj System, voting rights to the age group of 18, computer education, science and technology and various other significant measures took the prestige of the country to new heights,” the party said.
Former JKPCC president Peerzada Mohd.Sayeed presided over the meeting. Senior Congress leader and former JKPCC president and CWC member M Ghulam Ahmad Mir, CWC member Tariq Hameed Karra, ex-MC G N Monga, Mohd Anwar Bhat, Mahila President Shameema Raina, Surinder Singh Channi, Abdul Gani Khan and various other leaders also spoke on the occasion.
