Baramulla, March 18: Police on Saturday said it apprehended five persons involved in extortion and blackmailing in the Sheeri Shalteng area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A police official said the accused were involved in assaulting a local resident and extorting Rs 20,000 from him on February 27. “We received a written complaint from the victim, whose identity has been withheld, and subsequently registered a case under relevant sections in Police Station Sheeri,” he said.
The accused have been identified as Nasir Ahmad Dar, Irshad Ahmad Malla, Umar Akbar Ganie, Tajamul Bashir Malla, and Waseem Ahmad Malla, all residents of Sheeri Baramulla, the police official said, adding that after conducting an extensive investigation, police were able to apprehend all five accused individuals and recover the extorted amount of Rs 20,000 from their possession.
“The accused have been taken into custody and charged under relevant sections of the law,” the official said. “We will continue to investigate the matter and take strict action against anyone found guilty of such crimes in the future.”
