WORLD Environment Day: Tourism deptt launches cleanliness drives at tourist destinations

Srinagar, June 06:  Recognizing the importance of preserving the region's natural beauty and resources, the Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir has taken innovative steps to ensure the conservation of the environment.
With the "Beat Plastic Pollution" campaign at the forefront, the Directorate actively promoted reduced plastic usage and encouraged the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives.
A series of impactful activities were organized throughout Kashmir to commemorate this significant occasion. These initiatives aimed to promote environmental consciousness, cleanliness, and the overall well-being of the region.
One highlight of the celebration was the Gulmarg Cycle Rally, which emphasized sustainable transportation and the reduction of carbon emissions. Participants cycled through the picturesque terrain, showcasing the tourism industry's commitment to eco-friendly alternatives. To instill a sense of responsibility and maintain cleanliness, the department organized cleanliness drives in prominent locations such as Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Kokernag, Sinthan Top, Margan Top, and Srinagar.
These drives encouraged visitors, locals, and tourism service providers to actively contribute to cleanliness and hygiene, fostering a cleaner environment. Recognizing the importance of capacity building for tourism service providers, the department conducted various training programs and workshops.
These initiatives educated and empowered service providers to offer sustainable tourism experiences that align with the region's environmental goals. Plantation drives were also an integral part of the celebration, aiming to enhance the green cover, combat deforestation, and contribute to the overall ecological balance of the area. By organizing such drives, the department demonstrated its commitment to environmental preservation.
 
Education played a significant role in fostering environmental consciousness, particularly among the youth. In collaboration with educational institutions, the department organized essay competitions and open-air classrooms, providing students with the platform to express their ideas and perspectives on environmental preservation. The Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir, reiterated its resolute dedication to the preservation of the environment and the pursuit of sustainable development.
 
According to the director tourism,” Through collaborative efforts and the promotion of eco-friendly initiatives, the department aims to forge a greener and more resilient future for generations to come. As the celebration of World Environment Day concludes, the Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir, hopes that its commitment and efforts inspire individuals, communities, and organizations to prioritize environmental sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet.’
