Srinagar, July 30:
Emphasizing a robust clampdown against cross-border infiltration, security experts asserted on Sunday that adopting a “zero infiltration” approach could prove to be a potential game-changer in curbing terrorism and promoting lasting peace in the valley.
The statement comes four days after Union Minister of State for Home NityanandRai said that till June end this year there has been no infiltration from across the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB),
A senior police officer told Rising Kashmir that infiltration of terrorists from neighbouring country has been a major contributory factor to the rise of insurgency in the valley while the prevention of infiltration needs to be a top priority for the authorities.
“One of the major benefits of achieving zero infiltration is a considerable reduction in the number of terrorists operating within the region. By declining the inflow of new terrorists, the existing terrorist outfits will find it challenging to replenish their ranks, leading to a gradual weakening of their capabilities,” he said.
The MoS Home said that the number of terrorists infiltrating in 2022 was 14, 34 in 2021, 51 in 2020, and 141 in 2019.
Another official said that zero infiltration can disrupt the supply of arms, ammunition, and funds to terrorist groups. This, in turn, will limit their capacity to carry out attacks and cause violence, ultimately resulting in a decline in overall terrorism-related incidents.
“A notable aspect of this approach is its potential to create a conducive environment for dialogue and conflict resolution. With reduced violence and fewer active terrorists, chances of constructive engagement between stakeholders, including the government, local communities, and dissenting groups, are significantly improved,” he said.
The official said that use of technology, such as drones and surveillance equipment, can play a vital role in monitoring and securing vulnerable areas along the borders.
“Additionally, efforts to address the root causes of discontent and alienation in certain sections of the population are also crucial in parallel to a comprehensive counter-infiltration strategy,” he said.
Earlier on Friday, Union Minister of State for Home NityanandRais said that J&K witnessed zero infiltration of terrorists from across the border till June 30 this year. The MHA data states that 141 incidents of cross-border infiltration were reported in 2019, 51 in 2020, 34 in 2021 and just 14 in 2022.
In a significant development, the region of Jammu and Kashmir has achieved a historic milestone by successfully recording zero infiltration of terrorists for the first time since the eruption of insurgency in the area in 1990.
This accomplishment marks a major breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace and stability in the valley.
