Baramulla, Jun 05: The Department of Environmental Sciences at Government Degree College Baramulla, in collaboration with JKST& IC, observed World Environment Day by hosting a one-day workshop focused on the theme “Plastic Pollution in Baramulla: Concerns and Mitigations.”
The event was aimed to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution in Baramulla district.
Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar, the District Development Commissioner, honoured the workshop as the chief guest.
In her address, she commended the college’s efforts and advised them to investigate the plastic waste issue in Block Baramulla and Municipal Council Baramulla as a pilot project.
Dr. Mohammad Farooq Rather, the college principal, expressed his concern over the plastic menace in the district during his welcome speech.
The workshop’s first technical session featured a detailed presentation by Dr Humaira Qadri, the Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences.
She highlighted the challenges posed by plastic waste in Baramulla and proposed effective mitigation measures and a comprehensive management plan.
Additionally, a documentary produced by second-semester students of Environmental Sciences was screened, shedding light on plastic pollution in Baramulla District.
Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar praised the college’s initiative and urged them to collaborate with the administration to develop waste management strategies for the district. The college assured their full cooperation and collaboration.
The second and third technical sessions of the workshop were conducted in partnership with the Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship (IIE) Centre of the college. During the second session, an exhibition showcasing science models and art was organized.
The District Development Commissioner, President of Municipal Corporation, Baramulla, and other attendees highly appreciated several models.
The DDC even sought prototypes of some models. The IIE Centre identified innovative models for further support and mentoring.
The IIE Cell of the college also organized a talk titled “Innovation for Environmental Sustainability – Embracing the Change” in the third technical session.
Dr Humaira Qadri, the resource person, shared success stories of sustainable environmental innovations and encouraged students to adopt an innovative approach in their endeavors to make the earth a cleaner and more habitable place.
Dr Abdul Raouf Bhat, the Head of Chemistry Department, delivered special remarks and a vote of thanks at the end of the workshop. Dr Shahzadi Wafai Naw Bahaar, a faculty member from the Department of Environmental Science, skillfully moderated the event.
The workshop successfully shed light on the pressing issue of plastic pollution in Baramulla and provided a platform for collaboration and innovative solutions.
