Workshop on creative writing, soft skills begins at KU

Srinagar, Mar 3: To enhance students’ writing skills and professional communication, the Department of English, University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the Centre for Writing and Pedagogy, Krea University, Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated a one-week workshop on ‘Creative & Academic Writing and Soft Skills Development’ at the varsity.
The workshop is being held under the sponsorship scheme of the Higher Education Council. It aims to improve students’ academic and creative writing skills while developing critical thinking and professional communication for better career opportunities.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, emphasised the importance of creative and academic writing in today’s professional world.
“Our university is committed to the holistic development of students and this workshop will help them refine their communication skills. Soft skills development is a key focus of NEP 2020, and such initiatives will prepare students to express their ideas effectively,” she said. Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, highlighted the significance of the workshop in enhancing students’ and scholars’ ability to engage in structured and impactful writing.
“Effective writing is a vital skill that enhances academic excellence and professional success,” he said. Resource person of the workshop, Dr. Ananya Dasgupta, Director, Centre for Writing and Pedagogy, Krea University, underlined the importance of writing in shaping careers. “This workshop is designed to help students develop clarity in creative and academic writing while also enhancing their soft skills for a well-rounded learning experience,” she said. Earlier, Prof. Iffat Maqbool, Head, Department of English KU, in her welcome address, stressed on the growing importance of soft skills and effective communication in today’s fast-evolving world. The workshop features hands-on training and interactive sessions by experts covering various aspects of creative and academic writing. It includes participation from 65 students and scholars from the main and satellite campuses. The proceedings of the inaugural session were conducted by Prof. Mufti Mudasir, faculty at Department of English KU, who also delivered a formal vote of thanks.
