Srinagar, Dec 09 : The wildlife department successfully captured a leopard alive in the Qalamabad village of the Handwara area in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.
An official from the North Kashmir wildlife division informed Rising Kashmir that the leopard was apprehended in the Qalamabad area.
“The leopard entered the cage which we had set up at the location. This marks the second leopard we have captured alive, following a previous successful capture.The leopard has been transported to Sopore and subsequently sent to Dachigam National Park in Srinagar, where the wildlife department will ensure its proper care, ” official said.
He further said that we have already installed cages for leopards and bears, enabling the wildlife department to capture these animals alive, thereby preventing any potential harm to humans.
Earlier, on December 6, 2024, a tragic incident occurred when a two-year-old boy was killed by a leopard in Shirhama village of Mawar, Handwara, on Friday evening.
Additionally, reports of leopards roaming have emerged from Chewdara village in the Beerwah tehsil of the Central Kashmir Budgam district, where the wildlife department has also set up cages to ensure public safety.
In a separate incident, A leopard was found dead near a forest in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district.
An official from the Rajouri wildlife department reported that they received information from the police regarding the leopard’s death, as locals found it in the forest area.
“The wildlife department teams have arrived at the scene and have transported the leopard to the animal carcass to the veterinary hospital in Rajouri for a post-mortem examination,” the official said.
He added that the post-mortem will help determine the cause of death.
