Srinagar, Feb 17: The administration in Jammu and Kashmir is serious about the revival of water transport in Srinagar city to decongest the traffic in the city, which is currently grappling with heavy traffic jams.
Divulging the details, a senior government official told Rising Kashmir, The government is very serious about the revival of water transportation.
He said efforts were made earlier as well, but they were not executed properly. This time, a complete plan has been framed for the success of water transport in Srinagar city, and hopefully, this year, Srinagar will have sufficient water transport facilities available.
All the plans have been framed for its success,” the officer said, transport will initially be available on the Jhelum and Dal Lake , and in the coming time, it will be expanded to other water bodies in the city. This project is part of the Srinagar Smart City project.
Speaking exclusively with Rising Kashmir, General Manager of Srinagar Smart City, Anuj Mahalotra, stated, “We have issued its tenders, and by midyear, we can expect that it will be operational. There will be around 30 state-of-the-art boats that will be put in place for water transportation. With time and success, these state-of-the-art boats will increase.”
The general manager said the project has already been tendered out, and in the coming time, the project will be completed, and he hoped this will provide good relief to commuters. On being asked about apprehensions that this would be time-consuming, the officer stated, “These boats are special and will have good speed, and they are not like traditional boats that take time.
These boats will have a capacity of 12 to 20 passengers and will be all-weather friendly,” the officer said, adding, “The more people cooperate, the more they will be able to provide better facilities.”
It is believed that water transportation in Srinagar will not only contribute to the environment but also decongest city traffic.
The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir has also recently appealed to stakeholders to show their interest in the revival of water transportation in Srinagar city to decongest the city roads
