In response to mounting public complaints and viral social media footage exposing the unhygienic and deteriorating condition of Chapri Market at Assar-i-Sharief, Hazratbal, the administration has taken serious note of the issue.
The Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, during the recent review meeting for Mehraj-ul-Alam 2025, emphasized the need for immediate intervention, following which the chairperson directed urgent remedial measures.
To address the concerns, the administration has constituted a committee to assess the market conditions and recommend necessary improvements.
The committee will be led by Khursheed Ahmed Wani, Administrator, as the head, with Ashiq Hussain Wani, Administraton, Gulam-e-Murtaza, J.E, and Anzar Hamid, J.E, as its members.
The committee has been tasked with conducting a thorough review of Chapri Market, focusing on hygiene standards, structural aesthetics, and overall market conditions. Additionally, it will propose a cohesive color scheme for vendor structures to align with the ongoing beautification of the shrine area.
Another key responsibility assigned to the committee is addressing the longstanding issues of Sabzi Market vendors at Assar-i-Sharief. This includes suggesting a layout for canopy-type structures for their stalls and recommending measures to resolve rent-related concerns.
The committee has been given a strict timeline of ten days to submit its findings and recommendations. Authorities have assured swift action based on the committee’s report to improve the market’s condition and enhance the experience for both vendors and visitors at Assar-i-Sharief, Hazratbal.
