Srinagar, March 10: The newly appointed Vice Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Lakes and Conservation Management Authority (LCMA), Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, Monday called on the civil society to actively participate in efforts to preserve Dal and Nigeen lakes. He has proposed the establishment of local area committees to oversee solid waste collection and de-weeding operations, ensuring that no waste is dumped into the lakes or their surrounding channels.
During an extensive tour of Dal and Nigeen lakes, accompanied by LCMA officials, Dar assessed ongoing conservation efforts and visited interior areas and backwater channels. He issued on-the-spot directives regarding solid waste management and stressed the need for a large-scale de-weeding drive for crucial inflow and outflow channels.
Dar stressed on restoring and conserving Dal and Nigeen lakes stating that it remains one of his foremost priorities. He said that the mechanical equipment, all lake-cleaning machinery will be fully made operational ahead of the upcoming de-weeding season.
Furthermore, he vowed to curb illegal constructions and encroachments within LCMA’s jurisdiction, stating that preventing such activities would be a key focus in safeguarding the lakes.
The Vice Chairman’s appeal is part of a wider commitment to community-driven conservation efforts, with the formation of local area committees seen as a vital step in fostering public responsibility. The initiative aims to mobilise local support and ensure the long-term sustainability of these iconic water bodies for future generations.
