Basohli, Oct 22: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited Purthu and enthusiastically participated in the ongoing Basohli Mahotsav, joining a large number of citizens in celebrating the rich heritage of Basohli.
In his address, the Lt. Governor extended his congratulations to the J&K Administration and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) for their collaborative efforts to popularize the cultural and historical identity of the region, as well as the ingenuity of Basohli’s craft and art.
He emphasised that this unique endeavour aims to promote the workmanship of local artists and weavers, ensuring that their priceless products gain global recognition and admiration. The Lt. Governor expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their significant contributions to making Basohli Mahotsav a cradle of unique cultural and artistic heritage for the country.
Highlighting the commitment of the UT Administration, the Lt. Governor assured all necessary assistance for the promotion of Basohli paintings, Pashmina, and other local niche products. He credited the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their collective efforts in promoting the welfare of artists and artisans who have preserved the priceless heritage and diverse cultural traditions of Basohli.
The Lt. Governor praised Basohli for its world-famous paintings, which have infused new dimensions into Pahari Art, creating a distinctive style. He also recognized the excellence of other creative traditions, including Pashmina wool, with its matchless and unique production process, delicate weaving, and exquisite embroidery work.
Both the exclusive products, ‘Basohli paintings and Pashmina,’ have received GI registration to prevent counterfeiting and ensure access to the global market. Dedicated efforts are underway to provide better market linkages for local products like Tweed, Phulkari, Staple embroidery, and Bamboo craft. The Lt. Governor stressed the importance of ensuring that the benefits of development reach the households of families associated with traditional art and crafts.
He called upon public representatives, local residents, and all stakeholders to complement the government’s efforts in promoting tourism and other places of historical importance to unlock the economic growth potential of Basohli. He encouraged the publicising of Ramleela of Basohli on a larger scale and the organization of regular fairs to attract more visitors to the area.
Responding to the demands presented by public representatives, the Lt. Governor assured that the administration is sensitive to the development needs of the people. He announced that the Water Sports Centre at Basohli is ready and will be inaugurated soon.
During the event, the Lt. Governor released a Monograph on Vishwasthali and honoured local artists performing at Basholi Utsav. He visited stalls set up by artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs, and women to showcase contemporary art, craft, and culinary skills. He also engaged with artisans, craftspeople, and students of Chudamani Sansthan.
Earlier, the Lt. Governor planted a Rudraksha sapling at Model Higher Secondary School, Basohli. The event was attended by Col. Mahan Singh (Retd), DDC Chairman Kathua; Anand Jain, IGP Jammu;  Ramesh Kumar, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu; Rakesh Minhas, Deputy Commissioner Kathua; Harbir Singh, Deputy Commissioner Pathankot; Shakti Pathak, DIG Jammu – Samba – Kathua Range; Bharat Singh Manhas, Secretary JKAACL; PRI representatives, senior officers, and prominent citizens from all walks of life.
