Total area of custodian land in J&K is 1449406 Kanals

Jammu, Mar 25: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday stated that the total area of custodian land in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is 1449406 Kanals. In response to a question raised by MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah in the legislative Assembly regarding the area of custodian land in J&K, the government informed the house that in the Jammu division the total area of custodian land is 1393446 Kanal. The government further stated that total custodian land in Kashmir division is 55960 Kanals.
The government further stated that as per the report received from the office of the Custodian General, J&K vide No CG (EP)396/AQ 410/2025 dated 27-2-2025, the quantum of the custodian land under illegal occupation across the union territory in Jammu division is 162340 Kanals and in Kashmir Division the custodian land under illegal occupation is 3983 Kanals.
Providing further details on the steps taken for eviction of illegal occupants from the custodian land, the government informed the house that the removal of encroachment and retrieval of land from illegal occupants is a continuous process undertaken by the department.
“In this process evacuee land has been retrieved in the last five years as under, which is 2060 Kanals in Jammu division and2441 Kanals in Kashmir division. The government stated that a total of 4501 Kanals of land has been retrieved in the last five years in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the government revealed that a big chunk of illegal occupation of evacuee land is locked in litigation and both the custodians are vigorously contesting those cases before various forms for its early disposal and subsequent retrieval.

“However the department has already initiated action/proceedings under the relevant provisions of J&K Evacuees ( Administration of Property) Act Svt and Rules framed there under for removal of encroachment /illegal occupation from evacuee land,” govt further informed.
