Srinagar, Jan 06: To ensure that the famous ski resort—Gulmarg remains accessible to visitors throughout the winter season, the Mechanical and Hospital Engineering Department in the Tangmarg Subdivision has cleared the snow from all the routes connecting the Tangmarg and Gulmarg areas.
Shabir Ahmad, the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) for the Snow Clearance Control Room of the Mechanical and Hospital Engineering Department of the Tangmarg Subdivision, informed Rising Kashmir that snow clearance operations commenced on Saturday evening following the onset of snowfall in the Tangmarg and Gulmarg areas.
“The snow clearance operations continued throughout the night on Saturday. We have completed snow clearance in all areas under the jurisdiction of the Snow Clearance Control Room (SCCR) in Tangmarg,” he said.
AEE said that traffic movement on the Gulmarg road has been functional and smooth on both sides of the Gulmarg and Tangmarg road since the snowfall began on Saturday. Gulmarg received approximately one foot of snow, while Tangmarg and surrounding areas experienced snowfall of around 4 to 6 inches.
Tariq Ahmad Naik, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA), said that following a fresh spell of snowfall in the Kashmir Valley on December 28, 2024, the influx of tourists to Gulmarg has significantly increased.
“The frozen water in the Drung area of Tangmarg has become another attraction for tourists, with thousands visiting daily to witness the frozen waterfall,” he said. “The regulation mandates that all vehicles traveling to Gulmarg must be equipped with anti-skid snow chains. This requirement applies to all vehicles, including 4X4s. Vehicles without these snow chains will be prohibited from entering the area,” CEO Gulmarg said.
