Srinagar, Sep 06: To improve the waste management system in Srinagar city, the department of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is going to install underground bins in various locations across the city.
Divulging the details, an official of the corporation said that these underground bins will be installed downtown and in other areas of the city.
The officer said that presently the department is conducting door-to-door collection to make Srinagar litter free, adding that on a daily basis around 506 metric tonnes of waste are collected in all wards of Srinagar city.
He said hundreds of employees, carts, and hoppers vehicles are in place to keep Srinagar clean. The department is also conducting night cleaning shifts in the city to make Srinagar litter free.
The improvement of waste management practices in urban areas has long been a priority for policymakers, according to a senior official of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC). He claimed that discussions about how to deal with the scattered debris in important and vulnerable areas of the downtown have been ongoing for a considerable amount of time with professionals and experts.
According to the official, the SMC has been quite concerned about the dumpsters placed throughout the city because many homes spread their trash there, encouraging stray dogs that create a nuisance to nearby homeowners and onlookers.
The SMC has ensured door-to-door collection in key areas of the city while keeping waste and other garbage contained in an organized manner, which has reduced challenges for the department.
The officer went on to say that the department is also planning to install some big dustbins at congested marketplaces in Srinagar, which include commercial hub Lal Chowk and several other main markets.
The department has also issued tenders for the installation of underground bins at various locations in Srinagar to provide a better waste management mechanism to the people.
According to the senior official of the corporation, at present times, “Our staff’s working hours are largely consumed by cleaning up the trash that has been spilled repeatedly throughout the day in the same area. It was also getting harder to keep track of how frequently the trash cans were filled. “After the installation of underground bins in the city, there will be less time-consuming.
29 locations have been identified by the SMC for the installation of underground bins for the treatment of rubbish using contemporary methods. The official said, “On the one hand, it will meet the growing need for handling trash and garbage, but on the other hand, it will protect city inhabitants from catching diseases.”
