PERSONAL REFLECTION
The recent World Elder Abuse Awareness Day seminar in Srinagar shed light on the pressing issues faced by senior citizens in the region. As I reflect on the struggles of my elderly friend, a distinguished professional who spent her life working in a reputed concern, I am reminded of the importance of family bonding in our society.
A Life of Triumphs and Tragedies
My friend, a woman of remarkable strength, was married twice. Her first husband passed away in a tragic accident, leaving her to raise two children on her own. She remarried a diplomat, and despite their busy schedules, they spent 40 years together, cherishing every moment they had. After her husband’s passing, she was left alone in her palatial home, her children from the first marriage living abroad with their families. When she reached out to them for support, she was met with a blunt refusal.
The Loneliness Epidemic
As she navigated her golden years alone, loneliness crept into her mind, and she succumbed to depression. Doctors advised her to engage in social work or socializing, but it wasn’t until she moved to a 4-star elderly care home that she began to recover. Today, at 76, she is back on track, driving herself and socializing with her co-mates.
A Mirror to Society
The Bollywood movie “Baghban” had a deep emotional impact on me, as it portrayed the struggles of elderly parents who sacrifice everything for their children, only to be abandoned and abused by them. The story resonated with me, as I’ve seen similar instances in Kashmir. While there are families who care for their elderly parents as per Islamic teachings, the declining trend of family support is alarming.
A Call to Action
As Kashmir navigates the complexities of modernization and urbanization, we must prioritize the well-being of our senior citizens. We need more care homes, including paid options, where financially sound elderly individuals can spend their golden days happily.
For those who cannot afford these facilities, local imams and respected civil societies can play a vital role in collecting zakat and other donations to support the needy in care homes. By fostering a culture of empathy and understanding, we can create a supportive environment where our elderly population can thrive.
