The sharp clang of a hammer against copper echoes inside the dimly lit Van Posh workshop. Mohammad Aslam Bhat firmly holds a raw piece of copper, skillfully shaping it with his practiced hands. The shop carries decades of craftsmanship, its walls adorned with polished artefacts—each reflecting a tale of dedication, creativity, and perseverance.
In his ‘Van Posh’ workshop situated near Khanqah-e-Maula Shrine in Shehr-e-Khaas area of Srinagar, Mohammad Aslam dedicated himself to creating exquisite copper artefacts—ranging from jewellery and lamps to furniture, chandeliers, and even miniature architectural replicas. Among his most renowned creations is a meticulously crafted model of the Shah-i-Hamadan shrine’s dome, a masterpiece that required weeks of precision and effort to complete.
“I have been in this trade for the past 35 years, following the footsteps of my family, who were also involved but in a more traditional way. Initially, I too worked in the conventional style, but with the passage of time I introduced new innovations and started creating new designs such as table lamps and boats & other popular things of Kashmir like Shikara etc. The first piece I crafted was a replica of the dome of the Khanqah Maula shrine.” Mohammad Aslam Bhat said.
He further added that he also tried to make the jewelry items & fortunately people liked it too. “I always wanted to make such items that could grab the attention of people & Alhamdulillah I have been successful with this till now. I also want the young generation, who are suffering from depression due to the unemployment crisis in Kashmir, to adopt this profession and earn their livelihood, so that their financial burdens are eased and they can also appreciate the new innovations in copperware.” Aslam added.
Among Aslam’s most demanding yet fulfilling projects was crafting an intricate replica of the dome of the Shah-i-Hamadan shrine, a cherished emblem of Kashmiri heritage. This creation highlighted not only his remarkable craftsmanship but also his profound bond with his cultural roots. Showing us one of his finest creations, he shared his plans to create a replica of the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar inspired by its intricate architectural design.”
He is frequently approached by National Institute of Fashion Technology and Craft Development Institute to guide students in mastering the craft. “Students are genuinely eager to learn, we share quality time exchanging ideas and gaining insights from one another. There’s a growing interest among students in traditional arts. Some even visit my workshop regularly, he added, noting that more and more people are reaching out to introduce their children to this craft.”
Mohammad Aslam Bhat’s remarkable efforts in bringing innovation to the traditional art of copperware have not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his dedication to preserving and modernizing this centuries-old craft, the government honoured him with the prestigious ‘State Award’. This accolade, presented by the administration, stands as a testament to his skill, creativity, and commitment to keeping the cultural legacy of Kashmiri copperware alive while inspiring the next generation of artisans.
Aslam Bhat is more than just a craftsman; he is a custodian of culture, a bridge between the past and the future. His hands, weathered by time and devotion, shape more than utensils—they shape stories, symbols, and the soul of a people. His workshop is a space where heritage lives—not as a relic, but as a living, evolving art form. His dream is not only to preserve the craft but to see it flourish in the hands of the youth, especially those burdened by the weight of unemployment and disillusionment.
As a new chapter unfurls in the artistry of Kashmiri copperware, craftsmen like Aslam Bhat emerge as living symbols of resilience and creative passion. Their tireless devotion ensures that this exquisite craft will not only grace the halls of museums and the stalls of markets but will continue to weave its intricate beauty into the fabric of Kashmiri homes and hearts, preserving a legacy of artistry for generations to come.
