Jammu, Dec 07: In a significant address to the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, highlighted a significant and commendable decline in terrorism in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing the legislative body, Amit Shah outlined the historical context of terrorism in the region and presented compelling statistics that underscored the transformative impact of the Modi government’s approach to counter-terrorism.
Shah, responding to concerns raised during the discussion on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2023, underlined the positive impact of the government’s strategic measures.
“The era of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir began in the 1980s, leading to the displacement of generations. Had terrorism been addressed without political considerations, the bills currently under discussion might not have been necessary,” Shah said while criticising the lack of effective measures earlier
Giving statistics on terror-related incidents, Shah stated that between 1994 and 2004, a total of 40,164 incidents of terrorism occurred, decreasing to 7,217 between 2004 and 2014. However, during the nine years of the Modi government, this number further plummeted to a mere 2,197—an astounding 70% reduction. The Home Minister highlighted that a substantial portion of these incidents, approximately 65%, were quelled through effective police action.
Emphasising the positive outcomes, Shah presented statistics indicating a 72% decrease in civilian casualties and a 59% reduction in security forces’ fatalities during the Modi government’s tenure. Instances of stone pelting, organised strikes, and fatalities related to these incidents witnessed a remarkable decline, contributing to an overall improvement in the security landscape.
The Union Home Minister attributed this notable reduction in terrorism to the government’s comprehensive approach, citing the implementation of the Zero Terror Plan and a strategic focus on dismantling the entire ecosystem supporting terrorism. The Home Minister also underscored the government’s commitment to securing the region, evidenced by the decline in incidents such as ceasefire violations and infiltrations.
In his address to Lok Sabha, Amit Shah said that the strategic measures and persistent efforts of the government have not only improved security but have also laid the foundation for a more stable and prosperous region, thus showcasing a substantial decline in terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir during the Modi era.
Shah concluded his address by reaffirming the government’s unwavering dedication to the development of Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the implementation of various policies, including those promoting industrial growth and tourism, aimed at attracting investments and fostering socio-economic progress in the region.
