Budgam, May 23: Prominent political figure Zaffer Mir (Lasjan) has expressed concern over the acute water crisis that has gripped numerous parts of Srinagar and Budgam districts.
In his statement issued here, Mir highlighted that the 10 Million Gallons per Day (10 MGD) Tangnar Water Supply system is facing severe operational issues, leading to widespread distress among residents.
“The latest vertical pumps responsible for lifting water from the Jhelum River are out of service, leaving numerous areas without drinking water for the past five days. This is an alarming situation that requires immediate attention in order to provide relief to dozens of vicinities,” he said.
Mir added that malfunctioning pumps have halted the essential water supply, and the crisis has escalated as service tankers struggle to reach all affected areas.
“Over the past two days, concerned residents and village delegates have visited my office, voicing their urgent need for a resolution. Sadly, there is apathy on an administrative level which needs to be avoided to find a lasting solution,” he said.
Zaffer highlighted the urgency of the situation, saying that people are suffering immensely. “Families are unable to access clean drinking water, which is a basic necessity. This prolonged disruption is unacceptable and poses a significant risk to public health,” he said.
Mir has called for immediate intervention from the relevant authorities. “We need a clear and immediate response from the Budgam and Srinagar district administrations, the Chief Engineer of the Jal Shakti Department, and the Deputy Commissioners,” he urged.
“Immediate action is necessary to restore a reliable water supply to the affected areas. The longer this issue persists, the greater the hardship for the residents. Water is not just a basic need; it is fundamental to our health, our daily lives, and our dignity. The current situation is dire, and the affected communities deserve swift and decisive action from our leaders,” Zaffer added.
