Srinagar, June 23: The students at the Government Boys High School Magam in the Handwara area of north Kashmir are studying in makeshift sheds and tents amid the soaring temperature in Jammu and Kashmir.
The parents of the students have expressed resentment against the School Education Department for making “false promises” of providing basic facilities in government schools.
Around 250 students are enrolled in the school, and the limited space is severely impacting their education. Despite these challenges, the students managed to excel in the recent Class 10 exams, securing the second position at the zone level.
Zonal Education Officer (ZEO), Shabir Ahmad Badana, acknowledged the space crunch issue at the school. He said four additional rooms have been sanctioned and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been finalised. He assured that the construction work will commence soon.
Mohammad Ishtiyaq Khatana, a 10th-grade student, hailed the teachers for their efforts but lamented the lack of proper infrastructure which he said hinders their ability to grasp the lessons effectively.
The parents while voicing their concerns accused the School Education Department of jeopardising their children’s future by failing to provide adequate accommodation to them.
Naveed Shabir, a 9th-class student, said they often miss school when it rains in the area since there is no suitable shelter available. They currently receive their education in tents provided by the local army.
The students have urged the administration to intervene and provide them with sufficient accommodation.
