Anantnag, May 09: A student was seriously wounded, while the teacher was injured in Hardu-Toru village in the Achabal zone of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district when a branch of Chinar tree fell on them on Thursday morning.
According to locals, the students were studying outside in the Eidgah when a chinar branch suddenly fell on them, injuring the teacher and the student.
An official said the injured were initially taken to Sub District Hospital Achabal and then referred to GMC Anantnag. However, the student, Hazik Fayaz, son of Fayaz Ahmed Ganie, was referred to SKIMS Soura, while the teacher, Mukhtyar Ahmed Wani of Zone Achanal sustained minor injuries.
Aabid Hussain, a parent of one of the students, told Rising Kashmir that the school doesn’t have enough space for students to comfortably accommodate them inside the rooms.
“The school doesn’t even have land for a playground and has only three rooms for eight classes,” Hussain said. “This was the 4th class of the school, which was studying outside when the chinar branch fell on them. My daughter also studies in the same class and was among the other students who escaped unhurt in the incident.”
Chief Education Officer (CEO) Anantnag, Javed Ahmad Kichloo told Rising Kashmir that he has recently taken up the position and doesn’t have much information about the school. The CEO said he sought a report about the school by Friday.
Meanwhile, the locals demanded sanction of additional infrastructure for the school.
