Srinagar, March 10: The family and relatives of a 20-year-old youth from Srinagar, who died at SMHS Hospital on Saturday, have alleged negligence of doctors and demanded an inquiry into the matter.
Family members said that Faisal Ahmad from Soiteng Srinagar who was a case of intestinal obstruction was admitted at SMHS Hospital and he was not treated well by doctors leading to his death.
They said first he was admitted in a private hospital and later brought to SMHS during the night. They said that the youth who was brought to SMHS on Friday late night died at SMHS on Saturday evening.
“There was no ventilator available in the hospital. We went to the hospital authorities and they said that there was no ventilator available,” one of the relatives of the deceased said.
The angry relatives said that SMHS being a major multi-speciality tertiary care hospital is battling with shortage of ventilators and patients often suffer for want of critical support.
They also said that they were also not informed about the death of the patient and that they were also not given the medical records file.
“This is a murder. The authorities of GMC Srinagar should take immediate action against the culprits so that such incidents are not repeated in future,” the relatives said.
The family members and relatives of the deceased have also protested against the negligence of doctors and appealed the intervention of LG Administration into the matter.
The SMHS hospital has said that GMC Srinagar and other associated hospitals are committed to patient care and providing the best possible healthcare services to patients.
Medical Superintendent SMHS, Dr Muzaffer Zargar said the case has been studied well at the hospital by the doctors and the case is being followed by the Principal GMC Srinagar.
Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Administrator, Associated Hospitals GMC Srinagar said the male patient was admitted in a private hospital of Srinagar and was referred in a critical condition to SMHS hospital mid-night on (9/03/24) at 12:30 am.
“On arrival he was diagnosed with an acute abdomen with sepsis and septic shock. He was resuscitated and his condition explained to the family attendants and high risk consent for urgent surgery was obtained and shifted immediately to the theatre,” he said.
The Administrator said the patient was operated on at 3:30 a. m. He was having Faecal Peritonitis secondary to ileal perforation. Post operatively he was on a ventilator and was extubated during the day.
“His condition suddenly worsened around 6:00 p.m. An ICU consultation was sought and while intubation was being attempted the patient succumbed. Faecal Peritonitis with Septic shock carries a high mortality (50-90%) around the world,” he said.
In view of the patient reporting late to the hospital due to prolonged shock, faecal peritonitis, septicaemia and septic shock evident from his clinical picture and despite immediate resuscitation and timely surgery the patient could not come out of irreversible shock.
