Baramulla, Jan 23: Residents of Maharajpura in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district held a protest on Monday, demanding upgradation of 250 KVA transformer that had been installed in the area four years ago.
According to the protesting residents, the transformer frequently develops technical issues, causing power outages and difficulties for patients and students in particular.
The protesters, including both men and women, said that they have been raising the issue with officials for the past four years without success.
They also highlighted that the transformer struggles to handle the high consumer load during the winter months, causing frequent malfunctions.
“We’ve been without electricity for the last two months. During this month only, it developed technical snag thrice,” said one female protestor.
“The elderly, patients and students had to face a tough time,” she further added.
The residents criticized officials from the Power Development Department (PDD) for not addressing their demands and complaints.
“For the last four years we have been requesting the officials to issue another transformer or upgrade the current transformer but it seems they are ignoring our requests,” they said.
An official from the PDD in Sopore stated that they are aware of the issue and are taking steps to address it.
“We have informed the higher ups regarding the issue and the issue will be resolved very soon,” he said
