Kupwara, Oct 25: A government school teacher was booked on Friday for allegedly sexually molesting seven minor female students in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, sparking widespread outrage in the area.
According to police, a written complaint was filed by two residents of Dardpora at Police Station Kralpora, alleging that, Showkat Ahmad Bhat had engaged in sexual misconduct with the minor girls within the school premises.
The complaint stated that Bhat, taking advantage of his position, would lure the girls to a separate room and commit acts of sexual molestation. The victims, aged between 10-14 years, disclosed the incidents to their parents, prompting the complaint.
District Police Kupwara promptly registered a case (FIR No. 96/2024) under sections 9, 10, and 17 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
An investigation has been initiated, and preliminary findings suggest Bhat may have committed aggravated sexual assault. Another individual, Sajad Ahmad Mir, has been detained as an alleged accomplice.
“We take allegations of child abuse very seriously,” said a senior police official. “A thorough and impartial investigation is underway, ensuring compliance with all legal procedures.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through the area, with parents demanding swift action against the accused. “We trust teachers with our children’s safety and education. Such heinous acts are unacceptable,” said a resident.
The school authorities have been asked to cooperate with the investigation. The accused teacher has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The police have assured that further information will be disclosed as the investigation proceeds, in line with legal protocols.
