Ganderbal, Feb 21: The Sonamarg Beopar Mandal Association has urged the higher authorities of Jammu and Kashmir Bank to upgrade the existing counter in Sonamarg into a full-fledged Bank branch, citing difficulties faced by residents and businesses due to limited banking facilities.
President of the association, Shabir Ahmad Lone, said that the current JK Bank counter in Sonamarg only accepts cash deposits, but does not facilitate cash withdrawals or cheque transactions. “For even basic banking needs, people are forced to travel nearly 20 km to Kullan or Gund, which is a major inconvenience,” he said.
Lone emphasised that the demand for a proper bank branch has been pending for several years despite repeated assurances. “We were promised a full-fledged branch long ago, but nothing has been done so far. Sonamarg is not just a tourist hub but also home to many villages, and the lack of full banking services is affecting daily life and business activities,” he added.
The Beopar Mandal has appealed to JK Bank authorities and the MLA of Kangan to address their longstanding demand on a priority basis.
