Ganderbal, Feb 3: Nestled amidst the snow-clad peaks and verdant meadows of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, Sonamarg—aptly known as the meadow of gold—is casting its spell on travellers from across the country.
Many domestic tourists, mesmerised by its untouched beauty, have gone as far as to declare it “better than Switzerland,” captivated not only by its stunning landscapes but also by the heartfelt warmth of the Kashmiri people.
After traversing popular destinations such as Pahalgam and Gulmarg, countless visitors are discovering a unique tranquillity in Sonamarg’s serene expanses. Speaking to Rising Kashmir, a group of tourists from Pune, Maharashtra, shared their heartfelt experiences.
“We have seen Pahalgam and Gulmarg, but there is a charm in Sonamarg that words can’t capture,” said Ankita Deshmukh, a tourist from Mumbai. “The meadows stretch endlessly, the air is crisp, and there is a peace here that touches the soul. It’s truly better than Switzerland.”
For many, the journey to Kashmir began long before setting foot in the valley—sparked by glimpses of its beauty on social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. “We had only seen Kashmir in reels and travel vlogs. Witnessing it, especially Sonamarg, in person is surreal. No video can do justice to this grandeur,” beamed Rajesh Kulkarni, another traveller from Pune.
What sets Soanmarg apart, beyond its breathtaking scenery, is the unparalleled hospitality of its people. “The warmth of the locals is overwhelming,” said Sneha Patil from Mumbai. “Strangers greet you with smiles, offer tea, and treat you like family. It’s not just the landscape that’s beautiful but the people too.”
Vivek Sharma, a tourist from Delhi said: “If you are seeking peace, serenity and a connection with nature, Sonamarg is where you will find it. It’s heaven on the earth, right here in our own country.”
Kashmir’s tourism sector is flourishing, with visitors flocking to its valleys, alpine lakes, and snow-draped mountains. Thanks to the recent inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel, which ensures year-round access to Sonamarg, the Valley’s popularity is soaring.
